Coffee Guide

What are coffee capsules and how to choose the best ones?

Coffee capsules have become one of the most popular ways to quickly and
conveniently prepare espresso and espresso-based drinks at home over the last decade. This coffee
preparation method is valued for its stable extraction, repeatable quality,
minimal preparation errors, and ease of use. For these reasons, capsule coffee
is rapidly gaining popularity in the Lithuanian market as well.

In this article, we will review what coffee capsules are, how they work, how the main
capsule systems differ, and what to consider when choosing the most suitable option.

What are coffee capsules?

A coffee capsule is a hermetically sealed container, usually made of aluminum or multi-layered plastic, which holds a vacuum-packed portion of ground coffee. A standard capsule typically contains about 5–6 grams of coffee.

Hermetic packaging protects the coffee from oxygen, moisture, and light,
thus preserving its aromatic properties and stable taste. Capsules are designed to be
compatible with a specific type of capsule system and ensure a consistent coffee preparation
result.

The concept of capsules was developed in 1976 when Nestlé engineer Eric Favre sought to replicate the quality of barista-prepared espresso at home.

How do coffee capsules work?

When a capsule is inserted into the machine, it is automatically pierced, and hot water is passed through it at a pressure of 15–19 bars. Extraction typically takes about 20–30 seconds and allows for a stable, predictable taste in every cup.

Coffee Capsule Systems and Assortment

There are several main capsule systems on the market, which differ in their range of coffee and coffee drinks, as well as flavors:

Features a very wide selection of high-quality espresso capsules – from lighter, more subtle ones to rich, distinct espresso.

Designed not only for classic black coffee but also for various milk-based drinks and dessert-type beverages, such as cappuccino, latte, or hot chocolate.

Focused on authentic Italian espresso and consistent taste results, most often chosen in environments where coffee is prepared regularly and for multiple users.

Created for preparing classic Italian espresso at home, characterized by a balanced, traditional espresso profile.

Coffee Capsules or Coffee Beans – When do Capsules Have an Advantage?

  • Coffee capsules are usually chosen for their speed, consistent results, and ease of use.
  • Each capsule contains precisely dosed and hermetically packed coffee, which reduces the likelihood of preparation errors and ensures a repeatable taste.
  • Coffee beans offer more control over the brewing process, but this requires additional equipment and more skill. Therefore, capsule coffee often becomes a practical solution for daily use.

How to choose coffee capsules?

When choosing coffee capsules, the most important thing is to pay attention to their compatibility with your coffee machine. Once you know which capsule system you’re choosing, it’s worth considering the coffee’s roast level, flavor profile, and intensity.

Choose by flavor type:

  • If you prefer a milder, more aromatic coffee, choose light or medium roast, 100% Arabica capsules.
  • If you’re looking for a more intense, richer espresso, it’s worth choosing darker roast or Arabica and Robusta blends.
  • If you often drink coffee with milk, stronger capsules will help maintain a distinct flavor when making lattes or cappuccinos.

Frequently Asked Questions about Coffee Capsules

How to choose capsules for my machine?

First and foremost, coffee capsules must be chosen according to your coffee machine. Each capsule system (e.g., Nespresso®, Dolce Gusto®, Lavazza A Modo Mio®, or Lavazza Blue®) uses different shaped capsules that are only suitable for that specific system and are not compatible with other systems. Only after selecting the correct capsules for your machine should you consider the flavor profile, roast level, and coffee intensity.

What is inside the capsule – ground or instant coffee?

Coffee capsules contain ground roasted coffee, not instant coffee. The coffee in capsules is ground, dosed, and hermetically packed to preserve its aroma and ensure stable extraction. Instant coffee is not used in capsules.

Can coffee capsules be reused?

No, single-use coffee capsules are not designed for reuse. After one extraction, the coffee in the capsule is fully expended. Some capsules can be recycled, but not used a second time.

How to recycle used capsules?

Capsule recycling depends on their material. Aluminum capsules can be recycled according to local waste management or special collection options. Plastic or multi-layered capsules are usually recycled to a limited extent. Before discarding capsules, it is recommended to inquire about the applicable recycling rules in your region.

How long do coffee capsules last?

Coffee capsules typically last 12 to 24 months from the production date. Due to hermetic packaging, the coffee retains its aroma and flavor properties for a long time, even when stored at room temperature.

Why is capsule coffee so popular?

Capsule coffee is popular due to its convenience, quick preparation, and consistent quality. It allows you to enjoy excellent espresso or coffee drinks daily without additional skills or complex equipment, making it perfect for a modern, busy lifestyle.
